Our StoryMkhana means “girl” in the Abaluhya community of Kenya. We chose that name because girls are at the heart of everything we do. Since 2020, we’ve been reimagining menstrual health management in Africa; designing innovative, dignified, and culturally conscious solutions.

Our vision

A continent where girls and women have what they need to live, learn, and lead - with pride, power, and no shame around their periods.

Our Mission

To make safe, sustainable, and affordable menstrual health solutions accessible to every girl and woman in Africa; starting in Kenya.

The Mkhana Project

About the Project

The Mkhana Project is our flagship initiative, designed to break the barriers that menstruation creates in education, opportunity, and wellbeing. Rooted in dignity and empowerment, the project addresses the social stigma, lack of access to menstrual products, and limited menstrual health education that disproportionately affect girls and young women.

What's in the Bloom Kits?

At the heart of the project is the distribution of sustainable, reusable menstrual kits that provide dignity, comfort, and long-term support. We offer two thoughtfully designed kits tailored to meet varying needs and preferences:

  • Bloom Cup Kit: Includes 2 medical-grade menstrual cups, a storage pouch, and a collapsible sterilizer— lasting up to 10 years.
  • Bloom Pad Kit: Includes 5 washable pads, panties, soap, a bucket, pegs, and pouches for clean, reusable period care.

What We're Changing

  • School Absenteeism: Reducing missed school days caused by lack of access to menstrual products.
  • Period Shame and Stigma: Normalizing conversations around menstruation and promoting body confidence.
  • Single-Use Waste: Providing eco-friendly, reusable alternatives to reduce environmental impact.
  • Lack of Health Education: Equipping girls and communities with accurate menstrual and reproductive health information.
  • Underemployment: Creating job opportunities by sourcing and assembling kits through local producers.

Funded by Purpose

The Bloom Project operates on a "Profit with Purpose" model—every Bloom Period Journal sold funds a menstrual health kit.

One journal, one life changed.

With a project value of KES 3 Billion, we're committed to making a meaningful impact in menstrual health and education.
